Charlotte, NC: Calling all rambunctious hounds, cocky Corgis, loyal Labs and stately Spaniels in Mecklenburg County. It’s time to become a member of the Camp Bow Wow pack. On May 27, Camp Bow Wow, the country’s Premier Doggy Day and Overnight Camp, will open its doggy doors to Campers in the Charlotte Metro area. Now area dog owners at work or traveling can leave their pups to socialize and play in a facility designed to meet every need of the choosiest canines. Whether they’re heading to the airport, shopping at South Park, or cheering on the Panthers, pup parents can have confidence that their dogs will be well cared for by James and Patti Daniel and their well-trained team of Certified Camp Counselors® led by Camp Director Cindy Alspaugh.
Conveniently located at 4900 Chastain Avenue near the Woodlawn exit off I-77, the state-of-the-art digs for dogs was designed with amenities guaranteed to get tails wagging. The approximately 7,500-squarefoot facility has three large, climate-controlled indoor play areas with adjoining outside yards, a special Teacup play area for pint-sized pups and a spacious luxury suit for pampered pooches. Campers check in daily in the camp-style lobby, where they’ll find a selection of the coolest canine gear in town. Camp Bow Wow Charlotte Metro will also offer bathing and nail clipping services. Dog owners can check on their pup’s antics in the play yards at any time by logging on to the Camp Bow Wow Charlotte Metro website or through the Camp Bow Wow iPhone® app to watch real-time footage broadcast by one of the many
Camper Cams® installed around the camp. Both full- and half-day Camp options are available.
“The safety and happiness of all of our campers is our first priority,” said Patti Daniel, co-owner and Top Dog of Camp Bow Wow Charlotte Metro. “We make sure that our Campers get plenty of exercise, play and human attention. In our all-day play environment pups can go between the indoor, climate-controlled play areas and the adjacent outside areas at will. They never have to wait for a walk, and they can decide for themselves whether they’d like to run with the pack, climb on play bridges or curl up in a sunny nook for a nap.” To make things even more enjoyable for their urban pack, the Daniels installed synthetic turf in the play yards along with doggy playground equipment. Special bone-shaped puppy pools and shade sails will help keep them cool during hot summer days.
“Sending your dog to Camp helps to alleviate the stress many dog owners feel for their pups when they leave them at home alone,” continued James Daniel, “because they know their pups will be well cared for while they’re gone. The same holds true for our canine Campers. They don’t have time to be lonely or bored because they’re busy having fun – socializing and playing with the other dogs during the day. At the end of the day they’re all happy, tired out and ready to relax.” After a full day of play, Overnight Campers at Camp Bow Wow Charlotte Metro will retreat to one of the Camp’s 60 private, climate-controlled cabins, for dinner, downtime and a tasty Campfire Treat. The spacious cabins, all furnished with comfy cots and soft fleece blankets, are large enough that several Campers from the same family can bunk together at their owner’s request. To avoid upset stomachs, parents of overnight Campers are encouraged to bring their pup’s food from home. Camp fees are all-inclusive.
All campers at Camp Bow Wow are under the constant supervision of a Camp Counselor, trained in pet CPR, first aid, dog behavior, group play dynamics, safety/health management and, of course, cleaning procedures. Camp Bow Wow Charlotte Metro is staffed with one counselor to every 10 Campers. To further ensure the safety and security of all, new Campers are required to participate in a free interview day, before they attend camp. Canine Campers must be at least four months old; spayed or neutered if six months or older; up-to-date on their rabies and distemper vaccinations; have had a Bordetella (canine cough) vaccination within the last six months; and be in general good health and of sound temperament.
Carolina natives, the Daniels have lived in Charlotte for over 20 years. James, a lawyer, has been a dog-lover as far back as he can remember. He and wife, Patti, a school teacher, were attracted to Camp Bow Wow in part because of its Bow Wow Buddies Foundation, which promotes the health and welfare of animals by finding foster homes for unwanted animals, promoting human education and investing in research and treatment for animals devastated by illness and disease. Camp Bow Wow Charlotte Metro will partner with the rescue organization Project HALO and other dog rescue groups to place dogs in loving homes, as well as sponsor events that raise awareness for other charities in our community.
Since the Daniels will remain working in their current professions, they brought in Cindy Alspaugh to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Camp, and Debbie Vitale to market the services of Camp Bow Wow to area dog owners and businesses. Alspaugh, a former legal secretary for Daniel, has bred and trained pups for many years. Vitale, a Charlotte mom and dog owner, was attracted to Camp Bow Wow because of its commitment to excellent customer service.
