 Tim Hortons History

The Tim Hortons chain was founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. The chain's focus on top quality, always fresh product, value, great service and community leadership has allowed it to grow into the largest quick service restaurant chain in Canada specializing in always fresh coffee, baked goods and homestyle lunches.

The chain's biggest drawing card remains its legendary Tim Hortons coffee. The special blend is also available in cans, as are Tim Hortons hot chocolate and English Toffee and French Vanilla cappuccinos, so customers can also enjoy these great tasting products at home.

 

In addition to their regular stand alone stores, Tim Hortons locations can also be found in shopping malls, highway outlets, universities and hospitals, providing prominent visibility for the chain. Most standard Tim Hortons locations offer 24-hour drive-thru service, catering to consumers on the go. Combo unit locations, which house both a Tim Hortons and Wendy's, offer customers the convenience of both restaurants under one roof.

We developed a "Franchise Incentive Program" which is available in most markets, except Buffalo. This Program is intended to act as a catalyst in attracting appropriate franchise candidates for the Tim Hortons concept for the United States.
The program allows short term financing on the cost of the equipment, trade fixtures, furniture and interior signs for a 24 month period from the takeover/opening date.
An initial payment towards the equipment package (i.e. equipment, furniture, trade fixtures and sign) of $20,000 U.S. would be payable when you sign the Franchise Agreement. Your promissory note covers the balance.

Selection Process

The selection of new Tim Hortons restaurant owners is a most important decision involving an extensive interview/approval process. Not everyone who applies for a franchise meets the criteria to be a Tim Hortons restaurant owner. We strive to ensure that each restaurant owner possesses the necessary entrepreneurial drive, management skills, financial means and dedication which is required in today's competitive market.

We are proud of our dedicated restaurant owners chainwide, who exemplify and execute the Tim Hortons' principles and standards of operation on a daily basis. We carefully select hands-on owner/operators, who will devote their efforts on a full-time, long term basis to operating their restaurant. Our experience over our many years of operation has indicated strongly that a spousal team, or a team of two or more immediate family members, are the key to effectively managing a successful 24-hour operation. In fact, 95% of our restaurant owners operate a true family enterprise.

We do not grant area/regional development rights. We believe in building our system restaurant owner and restaurant by restaurant. We grant additional restaurants to only those restaurant owners whose performance demonstrates success in managing and operating their existing restaurants.

 

Training and Support

New Restaurant Owners undergo an intensive seven week training program at the Tim Hortons University, located in Oakville, Ontario, at the offices of our affiliate The TDL Group. The facility includes classrooms and a fully operational restaurant, providing trainees with intensive hands-on experience in the preparation of all Tim Hortons products. Strong emphasis is placed on food handling and hygiene procedures, team member relations, equipment maintenance and in-restaurant security systems.

Additionally, upon successfully completing the initial training program, you will spend up to 10 shifts doing "on-the-job training" in a fully-operational Tim Hortons, located in the same market as your own planned restaurant location.

 

We service our restaurant owners from our Dublin, Ohio office, where we maintain a team of skilled and dedicated professionals who provide operations, training, real estate development, construction, accounting, human resources, information technology, franchising and marketing support.

Our District Managers are the direct link to our restaurant owners through their frequent on-site visits. In addition to their primary function of providing experienced and knowledgeable feedback and guidance, they also ensure that our standards of product quality, value, cleanliness and guest service are consistently met in all locations within their district.
