Supplemental Learning Center Highlights the Importance of Child Development for American Education Week

Brain Balance Achievement Centers Spotlights Business Owners with Teaching Backgrounds

New Jersey City, N.J. – From November 17-23, 2013, public schools and educators around the nation will be celebrating American Education Week, paying tribute to all of the teachers and individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education. To recognize American Education Week, Brain Balance Achievement Centers is spotlighting a few of their franchise owners who have leveraged their education backgrounds at their centers.

As a supplemental learning center that helps children between the ages of 4 and 17 who are struggling with learning and behavioral disorders reach their academic, social and behavioral potential, the national centers’ whole-child, drug-free approach consists of three components: sensory motor exercises, cognitive work and nutritional guidance. Throughout the nation, several Brain Balance Achievement Centers are either owned by teachers or employ teachers on their staffs due to their passion for education and their natural ability to connect with children.

“Having the ability to effectively communicate with children who are battling with learning and behavioral disorders is so crucial in helping them to advance in the program,” said Dr. Robert Melillo, Founder of Brain Balance Achievement Centers. “We’ve found that people with education backgrounds are drawn to our centers because they’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles these children face in the classroom and realize that through Brain Balance, they’re able to help them work towards not only improved academic skills, but also improved social and behavioral skills that they’ll carry throughout their lives.”

The following Brain Balance Achievement Centers business owners have demonstrated exemplary work at their centers as a result of coming from a teaching background.

  • Kristen Johnson – Business owner of Brain Balance Achievement Centers in Tulsa, OK. Throughout Kristen’s childhood, she always imagined herself being a teacher just like her parents, both of whom advised her to pursue other options due to hardships that accompany the teacher lifestyle. Listening to her parents, Kristen earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and a Master’s in marriage and family counseling, all the while teaching various classes on the side, including swimming and Sunday school. After one year of working a corporate desk job, Kristen decided to follow her childhood passion and became a certified teacher. Shortly after starting to teach third grade, Kristen quickly realized that although her students were smart, many of them struggled to maintain focus and weren’t reaching their full potential. After her husband Isaac attended a seminar led by Dr. Melillo, he introduced the Brain Balance concept to Kristen. After three years of teaching, Kristen and her husband decided to open a center in Tulsa where she’d be able to use her teaching background to connect with children and her knowledge of the school system to help parents navigate through uncharted waters. They opened their center in November, 2011.

  • Greta Fowler – Business owner of Brain Balance Achievement Centers in Wilmington, DE. Before opening a center in Wilmington with her husband Doug, Greta taught in public and private schools for about ten years, primarily teaching English, music, and ESL (English as a second language). With experience co-teaching in a special education classroom, Greta recognized her son had a learning disability at seven years old. Rather than treat his symptoms with medication, she and her husband enrolled him in the Brain Balance program at the nearest center, which was located over an hour away. After three months, they observed significant results and decided to open a center in Wilmington where Greta could fulfill her passion for teaching while helping the many children with learning and behavioral issues throughout their community. They opened their center in November, 2012.
